UUDEVIEW FOR WINDOWS INSTALLATION
Note: These installation instructions apply to Windows 3.1. I do not
have Windows 95, and don't know which of the steps are different in
a Win95 environment. This means I also can't help you with
Win95-specific setup problems. I would really appreciate if someone
could contribute a Windows 95 installation manual, or donate a copy
:-)
The first step, of course, is to get a copy of the source code to your
hard disk. If you have not already done so, step back to the previous
page and download a copy.
Since UUdeview comes as a zip archive, you will also need an
unarchiver program. You can either use the DOS program pkunzip or the
Windows program quinzip (there is a Catch-22 here; because the Windows
archiver comes as archive, you'll need an archiver to unarchive the
archiver). The DOS archiver is a self-extracting file. You copy it to
an empty directory and start it, then you'll get all the files you
need.
Then, copy the UUDeview archive into a new directory, and then use the
unarchiver to extract the programs from the archive. This can be done
with some mouseclicks in Windows, or, with pkunzip, use the following
DOS command
pkunzip uudvw04g.zip
This gives you some textfiles (you will also find a copy of this text)
and two executables. Only the two executables, by the names of
uulaunch.exe (the Launcher) and uudv-win.exe (the Decoder) are
important for using the program, others are not needed.
Note: In the following text, I will assume that both executables are
in the directory d:\programm\uudeview. If you have them in a
different directory, change the pathnames in the following text
appropriately.
Understanding Launcher and Decoder
The decoder was trivially ported from the DOS version, and it still
awaits its options on the command line. If you run the Decoder in
Windows, it will simply display a help text, because it has not found
any command line options or files to decode. This is why the Decoder
cannot run stand-alone. So the Launcher was designed to provide the
user with a simple-to-use Windows interface on the front end, and feed
the Decoder on the back end. This is why you will always start up the
Launcher if you want to decode something, and therefore we will
install only the Launcher within the Program Manager.
However, there is an exception, a single case in which the Decoder can
be started directly; this will be explained in the manual.
Since recently, the Launcher is a little more than just a frontend to
the decoder, since it now also has a built-in encoding engine. Again,
the description how to encode can be found in the manual page.
Installation of the Launcher
Installation of the Launcher is quite simple. You arrange the File
Manager and the Program Manager so that they're both visible, and then
drag the file "uulaunch.exe" from the File Manager to a program group
of your choice within the Program Manager. The launcher's icon will
appear in the group. To change its label, select this icon, press
ALT-Enter and change the label.
Now, please go again to the File Manager, and choose the Associate
command from the File menu. This opens up a dialog box with two
fields. The first field is named Files with Extension. Enter the text
"UU" inside. You must then enter the fully specified path of the
Decoder in the other field, like
d:\programm\uudeview\uudv-win.exe
If you don't want to type in all of the path, you can also click on
the Browse button to select the Decoder from its subdirectory. Now,
commit this dialog box by pressing the OK button.
The last step to do is to tell the Launcher where to find the Decoder.
To do this, start up the Launcher by double-clicking its icon in the
Program Manager, and select Command from the Launcher's UUDeview
menu. This opens a file dialog box. Browse to the directory where the
decoder program resides, and double-click on uudv-win.exe (this is the
only choice the menu accepts). The Launcher automatically saves the
path to its initialization file.
Now, the installation process is hopefully complete.
